CITY OF INDUSTRY – Hacienda La Puente Unified School District delivered a detailed presentation showcasing the District’s success in implementing the 2021-22 theme of “Learning Forward-Building Bolder” during the 2022 State of the District, held virtually on Jan. 20.

Due to the recent COVID-19 surge, the scheduled in-person events were replaced with an in-depth video presentation by Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez, which was showcased on the District’s YouTube channel. The presentation included an overview of student, staff and District successes, facilities and budget updates, the expansion of socio-emotional growth systems and an outline on District programs.

“While our District was excited to celebrate our accomplishments in-person, the safety of our students, staff and greater community remains our top priority,” Jiménez said. “This year’s State of the District exemplifies our efforts to expand our curriculum, inspire our students through innovative programs and share future plans with our District community.”

The District’s 2021-22 theme, “Learning Forward-Building Bolder,” was emphasized throughout the presentation as Jiménez recognized academic achievements, the expansion of adult and special education curriculum, career technical education programs and the announcement of William Workman High School’s Early College Program, set to launch in fall 2022.

Throughout the presentation, Jiménez recognized numerous programs that help foster student success and enrichment opportunities including, Dual Language Immersion, Speech and Debate, New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, Makerspace and Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (C-STEM).

“The State of the District is a special opportunity that bring the community together and provides a recap of the District’s accomplishments,” Board President Jeffrey De La Torre said. “This year’s theme helped pave the way for our 2021-22 successes, and we look forward to continuing to build a brighter and bolder future for our students in 2022.”

At the end of the virtual event, the District premiered its showcase video that gave viewers a comprehensive look at the programs within the District, shared student and staff testimonials and celebrated Hacienda La Puente Unified’s achievements throughout the school year.

“I would like to thank our teachers, staff, administrators and the Board of Education for their dedication to our students throughout this challenging yet rewarding year,” Jiménez said. “Lastly, thank you to our students, families and Hacienda La Puente Community for their unwavering support and I look forward to a safe and successful 2022.”

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA- Orange Grove Middle School and Cedarlane Academy math teachers Samantha Higbee and Marissa Blessum have been named Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (C-STEM) Teachers of the Year by the UC Davis C-STEM Center for 2021.

Higbee and Blessum are joined by Rosalie Sinapi, principal at Los Altos Elementary School and Joanne Chan, District coordinator of instruction at Hacienda La Puente Unified School District who were recognized as C-STEM Administrators of the Year.

The UC Davis C-STEM Center's Educator Awards recognize C-STEM instructors, county administrators, volunteers and superintendents from K-12 schools for their success in teaching and integrating computing into STEM subjects.

During the District's initial program launch in 2019, Higbee and Blessum collaborated to learn the C-STEM programs, aiming to transform the math curriculum with hands-on coding and robotics and close the math achievement gap for at-risk students and English language learners.

"Teaching C-STEM is my passion," Blessum said. "I am honored to receive the Teacher of the Year Award alongside my dedicated colleague Samantha Higbee and represent the dynamic C-STEM program at Hacienda La Puente Unified School District."

UC Davis announced the C-STEM Teacher of the Year Award at their annual C-STEM Conference, held virtually Nov. 29 through Dec. 2. The conference celebrated this year's theme of "Accelerated Learning of Math and CS/STEAM."

Higbee and Blessum are well-established members of the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District community. Higbee taught at Valinda School of Academics for eight years and has spent the last 12 years at Orange Grove Middle School teaching sixth- and seventh-grade math, while Blessum has taught seventh-grade math at Cedarlane Academy for 16 years.

"Marissa and I were in the District's first cohort of teachers to welcome the C-STEM curriculum without any coding experience," Higbee said. "It was overwhelming at first, but with the support of the other new C-STEM teachers, District administrators and the UC Davis training in RoboBlockly and ChIDE programs, we were able to figure out lesson plans that worked for us."

Sinapi has worked in Hacienda La Puente Unified since 1996 and has served as principal at Los Altos Elementary School since 2012. She regularly attends C-STEM meetings, helps develop lesson plans and coaches the school's robotics team.

Chan is celebrating her 21st year with Hacienda La Puente Unified. Since the C-STEM program launch in 2019, she has collaborated with the UC Davis C-STEM Center to support teachers in integrating coding and robotics into math lessons using Roboblocky and ChIDE.

The supplementary curriculum RoboBlockly and ChIDE features self-guided coding, math activities, and theme-based projects and assists teachers without any prior coding and robotics experience to learn and implement the rigorous curriculum quickly.

"We introduced the program to six middle schools and nine secondary teachers and have since expanded the program to numerous elementary school sites and onboarded many instructors, bringing us to 13 K-8 schools and 48 teachers representing C-STEM at Hacienda La Puente Unified,” Chan said.

Each awardee received certificates from UC Davis signed by UC Davis Chancellor Gary May and C-STEM Center Director Harry Cheng; from the California Department of Education signed by State Superintendent of Public Education Tony Thurmond; and from the California State Legislature signed by State Senator Bill Dodd.

"I would like to thank the UC Davis C-STEM Center for their unwavering support across our campuses and congratulate Marissa Blessum, Samantha Higbee, Rosalie Sinapi and Joanne Chan on this well-deserved recognition," Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez said. "It is an honor to witness our students' growth as they develop pedagogical strategies, valuable skillsets and gain the confidence and determination to succeed in college and beyond."

HLPUSD_C-STEM_2021: Hacienda La Puente Unified's sixth- and seventh-grade math teacher at Orange Grove Academy, Sam Higbee, left, and seventh-grade math teacher at Cedarlane Academy, Marissa Blessum, second left, were recognized by the UC Davis C-STEM Center as C-STEM Teachers of the Year. They are joined by the Principal at Los Altos Elementary School, Rosalie Sinapi, second right, and District Coordinator of Instruction, Joanne Chan, right, who were recognized as C-STEM Administrators of the Year, respectively.

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA- Hacienda La Puente Unified School District has partnered with Scholastic Inc. to provide free, carefully curated book packs to students before winter break, supporting the District's inaugural Holiday Reading Campaign beginning Dec. 17.

Hacienda La Puente Unified's new District Librarian, Lesley Jarrett, has played an integral part in the campaign, selecting and distributing the reading material for every HLPUSD student in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.

The Holiday Reading Campaign aims to foster a reading culture in the home and promote the skills and knowledge that lead to longtime academic advantages.

"Reading helps make students better learners and communicators, but it also makes them better humans too," Jarrett said."This District believes in diverse literature, and I was honored to assist with selecting reading campaign material that not only delivers academic learning stories but narratives that foster social and emotional learning."

Since joining Hacienda La Puente Unified in August, Jarrett has assisted teachers and administrators with their research, special projects and curated book collections for the Holiday Reading Campaign book packs and SORA digital library.

The SORA digital library includes thousands of ebooks and audiobooks that work in conjunction with Hacienda La Puente Unified and Scholastic Inc.'s Holiday Reading Campaign to support the District's continuous efforts to ensure students have reading materials available at any time.

"When I first started supporting our use of SORA, the District told me to make the collection about the fun of reading and that was music to my ears," Jarrett said. "I always think of the students when selecting books for our District. What will speak to them? What will help them feel understood? Most importantly, what will make them happy they read a book?"

The Holiday Reading Campaign was funded by Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act. The grant program is available to local education agencies and schools to ensure children have an equal opportunity to obtain a high-quality education.

The Campaign's take-home book packs contain five free novels and a journal provided by Scholastic Inc., appealing to students' reading and grade level and relevant interests and coursework.

"Thank you to the Title I program funding, Scholastic Inc., and District Librarian Lesley Jarrett for your continuous support that made this Holiday Reading Campaign possible," Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Dr. Judy Fancher said. "Hacienda La Puente Unified School District is proud to give our students the gift of reading this holiday season."

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA- Hacienda La Puente Unified School District has been named a top employer among veterans in the workforce according to Forbes' 2021 America's Best Employers for Veterans survey, released on Nov. 9.

The District ranked among the top 200 companies receiving the highest total scores, from all industry sectors, across the country. In partnership with research and analysis firm Statista, Forbes surveyed more than 5,000 U.S. veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces – either in the active military, National Guard or military reserves. All respondents work part- or full-time for companies with at least 1,000 employees.

Employers were evaluated based on direct and indirect recommendations. Direct recommendations came from veterans employed at the company being ranked and included ratings on qualities such as atmosphere and development, image, working conditions, salary and wage, workplace and diversity, and a set of issues specific to the interests of veterans in the workplace. Indirect recommendations allowed veterans to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stand out either positively or negatively. Visit the Forbes website to view the survey methodology.

Hacienda La Puente Unified has employed veterans such as Roland A. Souza, a retired Master Sergeant who served in the U.S Army for 20 years. Souza has taught in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program at La Puente High School for four years, fostering student success by teaching leadership, social skills and motivating students to be better citizens. Visit the La Puente High School website for more information about JROTC in Hacienda La Puente Unified.

"To me, being a veteran means feeling the absolute pride and emotional gratification of serving our great country," Souza said. “Hacienda La Puente Unified recognizes the commitment and dedication it takes for veterans to serve our country and values the leadership skills and a sense of purpose the military experience provides."

The Hacienda La Puente Division of Adult Education also has a veterans office, which assists veterans in furthering their education by offering a wide variety of Veteran Affairs-approved career technical education courses.

"This award recognizes our commitment to cultivating a work environment that welcomes the veteran community as we aim to promote diversity, equality and inclusion in our District," Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez said. "Thank you to all of our fantastic veteran employees for their exceptional leadership, values and capabilities that help strengthen our District every day; we are proud to have you on our team."

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA – Hacienda La Puente Unified School District’s Board of Education celebrated the completion of several Measure BB-funded classroom modernization projects and approved a new funding strategy to resume construction and planning for the remaining District campuses during the Special Board Meeting on Oct. 21 and continuance meeting on Oct. 26.

Modernization projects are divided into nine phases that encompass every school in the District. Phases one and two are finalizing with classroom modernizations completed at Nelson Elementary School, Los Altos Elementary School, Mesa Robles School and Workman Elementary School and concluding at Cedarlane Academy.

The Board of Education approved the strategy to resume construction at schools in the first two phases on an accelerated schedule this winter. These schools include Grandview College Preparatory Academy, Newton Middle School and Sparks Middle School.

Phases three through nine are described as projected future phases to address updates needed on the other campuses in the District.

After completing all projects in phases one and two, the District will further outline the plan for completing the last seven phases.

Voters passed Measure BB in 2016, authorizing the District to issue up to $148 million in bonds to complete a comprehensive classroom modernization program; current cost estimates to finish all renovations amount to $223 million.

The cost increase is due to several factors, including inflation and COVID-related supply chain issues. The Board has approved closing the funding gap with investment proceeds, existing District funds and applying for a Matching Modernization Grant from the State of California.

“We are exploring every option to ensure our students, teachers and staff have these vital 21st-century classroom upgrades executed as soon as possible,” Associate Superintendent of Business Services Manoj Roychowdhury said.

The improvements are part of a comprehensive, innovative program to ensure all Hacienda La Puente Unified schools are up-to-date, in good repair and support the latest technology.

“Our goal is to continue active communication on all bond-related matters, ensuring our projects stay on track and that our campuses can inspire and support academic success,” Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez said. “Thank you, Hacienda La Puente Unified, Manoj Roychowdhury and the Board of Education for your time and dedication as we focus on fulfilling priority projects that promote our vision of learning forward, building bolder.”
